Lynne Kiel
The ArtistLynne Kiel, is passionate about art. After graduating from high school, this Ottawa native began the Fine Arts and Crafts program at Algonquin College. The program offered instruction in a broad variety of disciplines, such as jewellery making, weaving, silk screening, drawing, enamelling. It also offered a gateway into Ottawa's art community. While studying at Algonquin, Lynne met women who belonged to 85 Clarence, a collective of local artisans. This collective was one of the first of its kind in Ottawa, and offered some of Canada's best weavers, woodworkers, glass blowers, sculptors, and jewellery makers. Lynne's specialty was batik, a technique where the artist creates a pattern on fabric with melted wax. The fabric is then dyed, but the wax keeps the dye from setting on the design. Lynne used this process to create unique wall hangings and scarves, and until her work became too demanding, taught batik at the Ottawa School of Art. Tempted by her interest in fashion design, Lynne left the collective to study pattern making at the Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design. While at Richard Robinson's, Lynne began to perfect her own style of haute couture. Wanting to introduce more colour into her designs, Lynne began handpainting silk, and creating one of a kind silk jackets. Lynne's line has grown to include fleece scarves and vests, it is the silk jackets, meticulously constructed and individually handpainted, that continue to personify Lynne Kiel Fashion Design.
Lynne's InspirationLynne finds inspiration in all that is around her. Classic Chanel, Haute Couture, the sky at twilight, dragonflies in summer and the beautiful shades of Ottawa's autumn leaves. Lynne loves colour, and picks the most beautiful shades available. A green the colour of emeralds and a red like poppies, turquoise like a crisp, clear sky and dramatic purples for that very special occasion. These jewel tones make stunning additions to a navy kimono, a black jacket or an ivory t-shirt. And whether it's a special occasion or a night on the town, these are colours that will improve your mood and make you feel beautiful. Canada is a country known for its seasons. Here in the nation's capital, we celebrate those seasons, and like Lynne, find inspiration in their beauty. Each spring, the Ottawa Tulip Festival plants thousands of tulips in every available garden. Rows of reds, purples, yellows and whites, its no wonder Lynne paints this intriguing flower. And what could be better than a warm summer evening, a cool drink, and the light of dragonflies dotting the dark sky? Perhaps not Fall Rhapsody, but the changing of the leaves in and around Ottawa is worthy of it's own festival. The deep orange, yellow and maroon leaves are, like Lynne's designs, absolutely breathtaking.
